Animal Law

Thanks to April Savoy for suggesting this topic! In checking out the homepage for the International Institute for Animal Law, I came across the following page which provides a listing of Maryland legislation pertaining to animal law. Simply select “Maryland” from the drop down menu and click on “Search Legislation.” This provides a listing of proposed and passed legislation. Checking the box for “Law” gives you citations and links the Maryland Code. Unfortunately, this latter option links to the free Lexis version of the MD Code which, we all know, is cumbersome to use.

Who Are Your Elected Officials

If you’re looking for a quick source to find contact information for elected officials for each county in Maryland, the Maryland Association of Counties has a good page on this. Take a look. Also on this site, there’s a nice page which summarizes basic demographics (population, industries, etc.) of each county.

Minority Business

The Office of Minority Affairs publishes a Resource Guide which provides a list of resources for minorities interested in starting a business in Maryland. Also on this site, is a listing of Proposed Legislation Affecting Minority Business Enterprises. Unfortunately, the page seems to have been formatted wrong, so it’s not too readable.

Maryland Municipalities

For those of you looking for information on Maryland’s Municipalities, the following page provides a detailed map of Maryland’s 127 municipalities. Best of all, the page is interactive: clicking on the link for each municipality takes you to a separate page with more information on the municipality. From there, you can also typically link to the municipality’s homepage.

While we’re on the subject of maps, there are two other map pages that I’ve come across recently which are useful. The first is a page on Maryland Reassessment Maps from the State Department of Assessments and Taxation which provides a graphic view, by county and time period, when each county in Maryland will be reassessed. A second resource, is a page called Baltimore City iMap which allows you to zoom in and out on different parts of Baltimore City. Looks like it could be useful, but it does seem a bit cumbersome to use.

Inmate and Sex Offender Locator

Many of you may already know that the Division of Correction provides an online Inmate Locator. What I was not aware of was the Sex Offender Registry which is also available on this site. Both databases can be searched by partial names, which helps if you’re not exactly sure of the person’s name. The Sex Offender Registry also has pictures of perpetrators where available.

I recently came across a document on the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development website entitled "Guide To Legal Aspects of Doing Business In Maryland." Looks like it could be a good resource for anyone contemplating starting a business (or advising a client on how to do so) in Maryland.

Welcome To Maryland Law

As a researcher in the Baltimore office of Shapiro Sher Guinot and Sandler, I'm constantly on the look out for new resources on the web relating to Maryland law. Currently, though, as far as I know, no one has created a blog specifically on this topic. I therefore decided to create this blog as a resource for those of us interested in staying up to date on newsworthy Maryland legal developments and new online tools useful to the Maryland legal coummunity. I intend this to be a collaborative project--one that we can all contribute to and benefit from. So, I welcome your postings!
